About This Site
This site was set up on June, 1997. My initial intent was to force myself to learn about all aspects of the hepatitis B virus. This was due to the fact that my graduate student degree project is related to the virus. It also proved useful in teaching me how to design a user-friendly website and play with the graphics programs I had purchased. I did not think very much of the site since it was basically never hit by anyone other than myself. In an effort to get more hits, I submitted the URL to various search engines. In October 1997, the site was accepted by Yahoo. Afterwards, many other search engines also listed my site and the hits have been increasing ever since. The current counter does not reflect all the hits the site has received since it was reset by my ISP when they were having some technical difficulties. The current counter registers most main-page hits since February 22, 1998.

Feedback received from this site has sincerely opened my eyes to various individuals out there who either have HBV or know someone who does. It has also made me aware of the severe lack of knowledge on the subject. The veritable flood of questions I have answered has served to inspire me to continue my graduate work as well as keep my site as current and updated as possible. I have had many people ask permission to use my diagrams (even in lectures and business presentations). I have also stumbled across some websites that have "borrowed" my pictures (without my knowledge or consent... oh well).

One of the main problems with being a popular site is that Internet Service Providers (ISP) actually bill websites with increased bandwidth usage. Personal accounts (which mine is) are allowed ~500Mb of transfers per month. With over 4000 hits per month, 500Mb of transfers get used up really quickly. I was actually billed one month! Not good when on a student budget. Thankfully, my ISP, after reviewing my site, has kindly given me permission for over 2000Mb of transfer per month. I have not exceeded the transfer limit recently, but I have also severely downgraded the quality of images used on my site to save space and lower transfer amounts.

One of my favourite web claim-to-fame is to be cited by Time.com in a health related article by Christine Gorman on hepatitis B vaccinations. (I hope that link still works).

One minor point that I've forgotten to add to the page for awhile. My research in the area of HBV ended in January, 2001. From that date, major updates to this site have been slow if not non-existent. I have chosen to keep this page up since the majority of information remains correct and many still find the content available in this site helpful.

Seeing that you're reading this, I hope you find/have found my little niche in the web useful and informative. Feel free to visit the Questions & Answer page to give any feedback on the site, be it questions, comments, criticisms, etc.

About Me
My name is Robert and I am the designer and owner of this site. All images, buttons, etc within the site were designed by myself.

Special Thanks
Though I owe a lot to many people many things, the following have contributed in immeasurable ways to the development and character of this site. This is just my little way of thanking them.

  • Chris - My old boss. Without him, I wouldn't have been this interested in the virus in the first place.
  • Steve, John and Sheree of the Hepatitis B Information and Support List - A Great Trio of knowledgeable listeners who maintain an email hepatitis B support group list. They have also been the source for a lot of the treatment information I have posted.
  • Yahoo! - Well, without them, I don't think I'd be getting as many hits! *smirk*
