The Shield Blaster 1000 is the smallest of the peristaltic-pump-based water blasters released in 2004 by Mattel Inc. Unlike most other types of water blasters on the market, the Shield Blaster series relies upon a crank-based system to push water from the reservoir and out the nozzle. Shield Blaster 1000
The Shield Blaster 1000 is a small to medium-sized blaster that shares the same crank-based system as all other Shield Blasters, while also sharing many of their issues.
The main feature of this blaster lineup is the idea of having a shield integrated into the blaster, capable of blocking incoming enemy fire. The main problem with that concept is that you need a big enough shield to actually fulfill that role, something that this blaster's shield is not able to do very well due to its medium to small size. Plus, a problem with this model, as well as the Shield Blaster 500, is that the shield is not rotatable. It is stuck on the left side, further reducing its flexibility.
The only positive things I can say about this blaster, which are in common with all Shield Blasters, are its quite unique design and color choices, which I do quite like. I do like the crank-based system as well, and definitely prefer it to piston-based blasters, but I would not say it is better than air pressure blasters, and of course, nowhere near as good as the CPS blasters.
However, this system also implies that the weapon is unable to be used with just one hand, since you need to use one hand to hold it, and one hand to turn the crank and fire, meaning it is not even an ideal secondary weapon. There are very few scenarios where this blaster could actually be useful, like in very small to small water fights where everyone is using low-tier weapons with bad range and water output. In those cases, you won’t be outranged and will be able to block the occasional shot. Other than that, I don't think you will ever get much use out of this blaster.
Durability: Another problem with this blaster was its durability. This time, I was completely unable to test it, as the new-in-box unit I tried was already broken and did not shoot at all. Now, I hope that this was just my unit's problem, maybe also due to it being untouched for many years, but I have seen a similar trend for other Shield Blasters as well.
Due to the blaster not functioning, I was unable to measure the range, output per second, etc., and I can only say that the water tank capacity is 730 ml. This is quite a big step up compared to the 500, which would give it a decent amount of shooting time before needing to reload in battle. Even if I could not measure the statistics, I would expect it to perform slightly better than the 500, and a bit worse than the 2000. Plus, the pretty small 0.6X nozzle (estimated) means that the water output and range would still be quite horrible.
Here is a summary of its pros and cons:
Pros:
1) Nice unconventional design and colour choices.
2) It offers a different experience to traditional water guns due to its crank-based system.
Cons:
1) The shield is not big enough to be useful in many water fights, and the blaster can’t even be easily used as a secondary weapon.
2) I am assuming too low range and power.
3) As most Shield blasters, it seems to have bad durability.
Conclusions: Overall, at the time of this review (2026), unless you are a collector or you particularly like the design and crank-based system, I would not recommend this water blaster. It is also quite an old blaster, meaning you can’t find it very easily, and even if you do, it will probably be for much more money than its original price point and if you buy it intending to use it, you have no guarantee it will actually work.
