The Super Soaker Racer is a water powered racing car, propelled forward by a stream of water. The item is more formally known as the Super Soaker Turbo Racer, but it began appearing on the back of some earlier Super Soaker product boxes only under the name "Super Soaker Racer".

The Car ::

The Super Soaker Turbo Racer is an air and water powered vehicle. The forward part of the Turbo Racer is its reservoir and pressure chamber. This reservoir is filled via a fill port that is located at the top of the car. Being a pressurized-reservoir system, the cap must be fastened securely in order for pressure to be built. Interestingly, the wheels of the Turbo Racer are neither plastic nor rubber, instead being made of a soft, foam material. This makes the wheels lighter, though how durable they would be if this were used heavily is somewhat questionable.

At the rear of the vehicle is the attachment port for the hose as well as another hole which may serve as an pressure relief valve if one pumps in too much air.

The package also includes a fill cup. As the back of the box states, "Using measuring cup, pour 4 liquid ounces of clean, clear tap water into your turbo racer. [sic.]" As is true for any pressurized-resevoir device, overfilling would reduce the amount of space available for pressurizing; in the case of the Turbo Racer, the recommended fill amount is 4 fluid ounces (roughly 120 mL).

Pump ::

Unlike most water blasters, the pump for the Super Soaker Turbo Racer is a separate piece. In the case of the Turbo Racer, having the pump separate makes the car portion lighter as well as allowing the pump, itself, to be a little larger. The pump only pushes air into the chamber. It attaches to the car via some simple, flexible tubing and an adapter that has a clip on it. The clip serves both to secure the pump to the racer while priming the reservoir as well as being the launch/trigger mechanism when one is ready to let the car race.

Launching ::

To use, as some may have already figured out, one must first fill the tank with water, cap the fill port securely, then attach the pump properly and pump several times (15-20 pumps according to the box) to build sufficient pressure. Once pumped and aimed in the direction of choice, the clip on the pump adapter is pressed to release the car and pressurized water is pushed out of the hole, pushing the car forward for as long as it has water to expel. The box says the car can travel up to 70 feet, but this has not been tested here and that, of course, is assuming level ground.

Overall ::

As a whole, the Super Soaker Turbo Racer is a neat item from the heydays of the Super Soaker brand. While not particularly useful in a water fight, the Super Soaker Turbo Racer is a fun, water-powered device for playing with outdoors and showing the efficacy of liquid-based propulsion systems. A similar sort of product was released in 1996, the Super Soaker Batman Forever Batmobile. For all intents and purposes, the later is identical to the Super Soaker Turbo Racer apart from the styling on the car part.
